City Art
in Columbia, SC, Offers Works by K. Wayne Thornley
City Art in Columbia,
SC, celebrates the holiday season with the solo show of works
by K. Wayne Thornley entitled, Scratching the Surface.
The show will be on view through Dec. 23, 2004.
Thornley will make his City Art debut with his latest work that
continues his study of primal themes. His paintings reflect his
fascination with territory, texture, and "mark making."
Thornley incises lines, shapes, and symbols into layers of acrylic
medium and paint to create surfaces that suggest primitive landscapes
or unearthed artifacts.
"I enjoy constructing paintings that hint at primitive themes.
They are about past and present, what lies above the surface and
what lies beneath. Most importantly, they are the physical remains
of a primal urge we all have to leave some evidence of existence,"
explains Thornley.
Thornley has been a significant member of the Columbia arts scene
for many years. He has been an active supporter and participant
in local and state art organizations for over 20 years. Thornley
has consistently garnered top honors in juried competitions across
the Southeast.
Thornley is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where
he studied art, art history, advertising and marketing communications.
His work has been featured in exhibitions at York County Museum,
Rock Hill, SC; Queens College, Charlotte, NC; The Upstairs Gallery,
Tryon, NC; The Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC; Carol Saunders
Gallery, Columbia, SC; Columbia College, Columbia, SC; and the
Lipscomb Gallery at the South Carolina State Museum, Columbia,
SC.
