Hampton
III Gallery in Taylors, SC, Features Works by Darell Koons
Hampton III Gallery
in Taylors, SC, just outside of Greenville, is presenting the
exhibition, SC Rural Scenes, featuring new works by Greenville
artist, Darell Koons. Koons who has been painting in South Carolina
since the mid 50's, turns 80 years old on Dec. 18, 2004. The exhibition
will celebrate this milestone by featuring acrylic and watercolor
paintings depicting rural South Carolina.
Known for his
rustic barns and old structures, Koon's early work isolated the
buildings as they loomed large against hazy blue skies. Today
his view pans the larger landscape. Now farms are painted with
their surrounding outer structures; the skies have intensified
with sunsets and storms. Koons states, "No one can question
the simplicity, the honesty and the integrity of the Americans
who built these barns and enduring real hardships. They knew how
to live, and not just how to make a living. The farm brings back
memories. My early paintings have been said to have a lonely feeling
about them. Perhaps, I had a difficult childhood growing up on
a farm in Michigan in the 30's. Often the temperature would be
20 degrees below zero. We didn't have the facilities that people
have today, but we always had enough to eat. On the farm, you
always had food."
On Nov. 30,
2004, the Greenville Conty Museum of Art opened the exhibit, Darell
Koons: Downtown. Scenes of Greenville's fading urban landscape
are featured. The exhibition runs through Jan. 23, 2005. An artist's
talk is scheduled for Dec. 9, at 6:30pm at the museum. Koons will
discuss the evolution of his work by presenting a slide presentation.
The public is invited to attend.
Koons' work
has been shown in over 45 solo exhibitions, including the Mint
Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC; Florence Museum, Florence, SC; and
the Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, SC. Work appears
in the permanent collections of numerous private and public holdings,
among which are the SC Arts Commission, The Gibbes Museum of Art,
Butler Institute of American Art, Palmetto Bank, and Carolina
First.
