Lewis &
Clark Gallery in Columbia, SC, Offers Several Exhibits for Vista
Lights
Lewis & Clark Gallery in Columbia, SC, is presenting exhibitions
by Stephen Chesley, John G. Wright, and Margie Lee. Both Chesley
and Wright live in Columbia, SC. Lee lives in Portland, OR. The
exhibitions opened during Vista Lights on Nov. 18 and will stay
up through Dec. 31, 2004.
Chesley's exhibition, Painting, is a single, 6 x 10 foot
painting. Lee's exhibition, West Coast Women, presents
small paintings of women rendered in a vigorous, colorful and
somewhat angular fashion that fits within the tradition of West
Coast Figuration. Wright's show, Black Box, consists of
conceptual, minimalist wall assemblages that combine stark, high-impact
esthetics with social and political commentary.
Stephen Chesley
Stephen Chesley,
(b. 1952) grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. He has been a mainstay
in South Carolina arts for decades with a reputation that reaches
well beyond the state. Among the influences on his work are 19th
century Americans George Innes, Winslow Homer, James Whistler,
and Albert Pinkham Ryder as well as Edward Hopper.
Margie Lee (b. 1950) is a Washington state native. Her shows include
a 1999 solo exhibition at Whatcom County Museum of History and
Art in Bellingham, WA. Her small acrylic paintings have a decidedly
Bay Area or West Coast Figuration flavor, related to the 1950s
figurative work of David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff,
and others.
John Wright (b. 1962) is a native of Hampton County, SC. He teaches
at Benedict College in Columbia. His work is strongly influenced
by 1960s and 1970s Minimalism. Wright has a strong interest in
composition and design, which he uses in his work to allude to
his personal history as a Southerner, to American culture, and
especially cultural cliches.
