December Issue 2004
Shain Gallery
in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Amy Dobbs and Roger Dale Brown
Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, Common
Ground, which will be on view from Dec. 3 - 31, 2004. This
exhibit pairs two very different artists for the first time; Amy
Dobbs and Roger Dale Brown.
Although their styles and backgrounds are quite diverse, both
artists share an appreciation for the fundamentals of classical
painting techniques as well as a deep emotional tie to their chosen
subject matter. The show will include still lifes and landscapes
by both artists.
Amy Dobbs
Amy Dobbs graduated
Magna Cum Laude from Meredith College on a Fine Arts Scholarship.
In 1990, she was the recipient of the Eleanor Davis Scholarship,
which gave her opportunity to study art in France. Two years later,
Dobbs began work as an assistant artist to Ben Long on the NationsBank
Corporate Center, Charlotte, NC. Upon completion of this project,
she went to work on the Charles Lindberg Fresco Project in Little
Falls, MA.
In 1998, Dobbs won the Jean-Haffen Foundation Award for independent
study in Dinan, France. She now lives and works in rural France.
Dobbs describes her work as a "pictorial diary of the people
I meet, the places I go, or simply the way the light is falling
across the table." In pursuing her quest to create paintings
that celebrate the "silent and forgotten" occurrences
of life, she continues to receive praise from critics and her
contemporaries for her expert draughtmanship, detailed brush strokes
and her unsurpassed use of color.
The recipient of numerous awards and honors in theUnited States
and abroad, Dobbs is represented in several private and public
collections including The Tower Club, Washington, DC, and the
Congressional Offices, Washington, DC.
Roger Dale Brown
Nashville native,
Roger Dale Brown, studied art and painting at Middle Tennessee
University. He then continued his studies with numerous artists,
notably, Scott Christensen and Dawn Whitelaw.
An avid plein-air painter, Brown has traveled across theUnited
States painting landscapes and seascapes from all over the country.
In his landscapes, Brown seeks to actively involve the observer
by bringing each scene to life; enabling the viewer to "feel
the color of the trees and the warmth of the sun."
Brown is active in many professional organizations including:
Oil Painters of America, the Chestnut Group and the Cumberland
Society of Painters. In 2004, he began serving as President of
the Southeastern Plein Air Association of Painters.
