SOLO Art
Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Dorothy Shoemaker
Dorothy Shoemaker:
New Works, is a solo exhibition featuring her recent
oil paintings at SOLO Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, on view
through Dec. 31, 2004. European and Carolina landscapes are included
in the exhibit.
Shoemaker started painting in oils after already achieving national
success as a watercolorist. Additionally, she is educated in a
broad spectrum of the visual arts including drawing, sculpture
and figure painting. She ultimately found that oils are the medium
for her. Shoemaker's style reflects her love of color and expressive
brushstrokes. Her favorite subjects in recent years have been
landscapes, with her attention divided evenly between scenes of
European towns and countrysides and vistas of Carolina coastal
and mountain areas. Whenever possible, Shoemaker sets up canvas,
paints and her easel to do plein-air painting.
Born in Virginia, Shoemaker now lives in South Carolina. Her paintings
have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in numerous museums
and galleries from New Jersey to Georgia. Her work has appeared
in print in a number of publications. Shoemaker has been the recipient
of several grants, including two from the York County Arts Council.
Shoemaker has studied with a number of nationally known artists,
including Richard Schmid, Connie Winters, James Kerr, Andy Braitman,
Kim English, Elizabeth Ross and Frank Creech. In addition to private
collections, her work hangs in many corporate collections, including
Wachovia, The Charlotte Observer, Florida Power & Light,
First Union National Bank and BB&T. Shoemaker has also been
a featured artist at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.
