Beaufort Performing Arts Center in Beaufort, SC, Features Works by Laurel Hausler

New Beaufort arrival, and well-known national artist, Laurel Hausler, will open her first solo show in South Carolina on Dec. 2, at the University of South Carolina, Beaufort's Performing Arts Center Gallery. The exhibit will be on view through Dec. 31, 2005.

Hausler's work has been likened to that of Frida Kahlo and Edward Gorey. She uses a variety of media, from oil to felt-doll shadowboxes, to spin tales of mysterious worlds and strange storybook characters.

"My move to South Carolina has been great for my work," says Hausler, "The age and beauty of Beaufort provide the perfect backdrop for the mysterious tableaux I create."

Hausler has shown in galleries nationally, and has recently completed a residency at Virginia Center for Creative Arts at Sweet Briar College. In Beaufort, she intends to start a mural painting business. Currently, she teaches art part-time with her husband, artist John Lancaster, and is working on a documentary with local filmmaker, Emily Fader.

"Laurel's fun and provocative pieces are a refreshing new addition to the Beaufort art scene," says Arts Council of Beaufort Interim Director, Lily Joplin.
