City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Michael Gibson
City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition of acrylic and charcoal entitled Visceral, by Charleston artist, Michael Gibson, from Dec. 7 through Jan. 2, 2006.
Gibson was born in 1953 in Cincinnati, OH. He moved to Charleston with his family in 1970. From the time he graduated from high school until he started to paint, he was collecting art books, subscribing to art magazines, going to art galleries and museums and keeping a sketchbook.
Gibson has painted in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gouache. He now primarily works in acrylic, charcoal and marker pen. Gibson attended the School of the Arts at the College of Charleston, where he learned sculpting techniques. He has fabricated sculptures in steel and wood as well as cast bronze, aluminum, iron, plaster and wax. Gibson has been in a few local juried art exhibitions.
Gibson comments on his work: "My primary concern is to communicate the feeling or emotion of a subject or a scene. I want my paintings to do more than be a record of my subjects, Ninety percent of what I paint is abstraction or abstracted in some way. I use color, shapes, and markings to create an effect rather than attempting to represent real life accurately. Sometimes I paint with no subject in mind at all. I may pick a color or colors or a certain shape or maybe even random markings and work with these until a picture develops that completes itself."
