Edward Dare Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Leslie Pratt-Thomas

The Edward Dare Gallery in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Our Landscape, featuring works by Leslie Pratt-Thomas, on view from Dec. 2 - 31, 2005.

Pratt-Thomas is an established award winning local artist with an eye for detail, a sense of placement and a determination to capture a true likeness whether painting landscapes, figures or architectural subject matter. Although she enjoys painting on location or setting up still life arrangements, she has a particular passion for portraiture and is renowned for her skills in capturing the essence of the human form.

Pratt-Thomas has studied figure drawing and oil painting for many years with several local artists, such as Jon Michel, John Doyle, Elizabeth Bronson and Martin Ahrens and this year she had the opportunity to study with both Kim English and Mary Whyte. Additional noted artists in her resume of studies include Peggy Bumgartner, Daniel Greene, Burton Silverman, Richard Schmidt and Everett Raymond Kinstler, some of America's best portrait artists.

Born and raised in Canada and Boston, Pratt-Thomas has lived in Charleston since falling in love with the area as a result of a weekend getaway from her undergraduate studies at Furman. After receiving a graduate degree in clinical counseling and working in that field for eight years, she followed her true calling and embarked on what has become a very successful career as a full time painter. Photographing subjects from which to paint, painting from life with her Tuesday painter friends, drawing daily, and painting a variety of subject matter, all have become a happy regimen of Pratt-Thomas' life.

According to Pratt-Thomas, this new body of work which is focused on our lowcountry landscape has been developing in her mind as she has grown to appreciate the subtle seasonal changes of our marshlands: "Years ago my husband, a Charleston native, remarked about the changing colors of the fall marsh. Coming from New England, I was used to a bit more drama with my fall color! Now after living here for close to thirty years, the subtleties of the changing marsh in each season continually amaze, delight, and inspire me".

Pratt-Thomas is an exhibiting member of both the Mt. Pleasant Artist Guild and the Charleston Artist Guild as well as an active member of the Portrait Society of America, Inc. Some of her more recent awards include a Merit Award for the "2003 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Show", Second Place in the 2003 Charleston Artist Guild Show, and Best in Show for the 2002 Mt. Pleasant Blessing of the Fleet competition.

More of Pratt-Thomas' latest work can also be seen at Sandpiper Gallery located on Sullivanís Island, SC.
