Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, Features Travels of Charleston Artists
The fruits of Charleston artists' adventures abroad are on display at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, in the exhibition, Leaving the Lowcountry: Charleston Renaissance Artists on the Road, on view from Dec. 16 through May 7, 2006, in the Museum's Charleston Renaissance Gallery.
Featuring work executed by Charleston-based artists working outside their typical Lowcountry landscape, this exhibition takes the viewer on a creative journey through the dynamic visions of such celebrated artists as Alfred Hutty (American, 1877 - 1954), William Halsey (American, 1915 - 1999) and Elizabeth O'Neill Verner (American, 1883 - 1979).
The period of Southern history known as the Charleston Renaissance (1915-1940) is exemplified by the work of a small enclave of resident artists who instilled pride in Lowcountry residents through passionate interpretations of the rich and diverse Charleston landscape. Many of these artists also forged connections with the larger art community of the period through work and study in such exotic locales as Japan, Morocco and France. The artwork created on such excursions pays tribute to Charlestonians' adventuresome spirit. As the aesthetic heart of the Lowcountry, the Gibbes has always been the center for creative activity in Charleston, and the exhibition Leaving the Lowcountry: Charleston Renaissance Artists on the Road celebrates the explorations of the Charleston Renaissance artists, the cornerstones of the Gibbes' permanent collection.
This exhibition is sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Eric G. Friberg.
