Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features NC Quilts
The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, is
hosting the exhibition, 150 Years of North Carolina Quilts,
Selections from the Pattie Royster James Collection, created
by Dr. A. Everette James of Chapel Hill, NC. The exhibit will
be on view through Jan. 29, 2006, in the Museum's second floor
Coe Gallery.
James was inspired by his mother and her Double Wedding Ring quilts.
This collection captures the essence of North Carolina heritage
while representing the state's 100 counties in cloth documentation
of particular people, places and times. The Pattie Royster James
Collection features quilts from the late 1800's that demonstrate
a rustic creativity and craft that is unsurpassed.
Quilting is an artistic expression and craft that grew out of
the basic need for warmth. Quilts provide a history like no other
artistic media - the economy, technology and politics are but
a few things reflected within their composition. The Pattie Royster
James Collection represents a unique learning opportunity for
Museum visitors, including fourth graders studying North Carolina
history as part of their standard course of study. Teachers and
parents should call Ginny Zellmer, HMA's Youth Educator for additional
information about the Museum's school offerings related to this
exhibit. For information on quilting classes, call Kate Worm,
HMA's Adult Educator.
The Hickory Museum of Art is a United Arts Funded Affiliate of the Catawba County Council for the Arts.
