Boggess. His dynamic, yet soothing scenes capture nature's raw
beauty with stunningly executed skill. The exhibit, Lynn
Boggess: Autumn, will be on view from Dec. 2 - Jan. 5, 2006.
His large canvases and the fact that Boggess completes all of his works plein air, help the viewer to experience his work as though they were there in the landscape. Although he paints outdoors year-round, the works in this show feature works depicted in autumn. Boggess genuinely captures this season when the leaves change color and are blown from their branches, allowing bits of the sky to peak through.
Boggess often paints on the bank of a river allowing him to incorporate land, river, and sky. Rather than presenting a vast panoramic view, each canvas focuses on a small piece of land, depicting densely grown vegetation and its blurred reflection in the gently rippled water. The artist chooses to exclude any evidence of human-life in his work, be it people themselves or man-made objects, resulting in the depiction of nature in its pure, raw beauty.
Boggess' working method and skill is impressive. Not only does the artist paint his large canvases on location, but he mixes his own pigment using only primary colors which he applies to the canvas with cement trowels and occasionally a palette knife. These tools would normally result in unrefined, broad brushstrokes; however, Boggess' mastery of his technique allows him to illustrate details such as single leaves and thin branches with precision.
Boggess' impressive career has led to the inclusion of his work in public and private collections in the southeast and internationally.
