Mark Kelvin Horton Studio Gallery in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Features Works by Shannon Runquist & Mark Horton
The Mark Kelvin Horton Studio Gallery in the I'on community of Mount Pleasant, SC, is celebrating the holiday season with an exhibit of small works and plein air paintings by Shannon S. Runquist and Mark Kelvin Horton. The exhibition will be on view from Dec. 1 - 31, 2005.
Shannon Runquist and Mark Horton, neighbors and painting partners, will be presenting recent works showcasing the local environment, Charleston Streetscapes as well as scenes from the I'on Community. Most of the works were produced en plein air over the last several weeks.
Runquist was born in Savannah, GA, and has
spent most of her life in the Coastal South. Living in the Golden
Isles of Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina she has
developed a great love for the south's amazingly beautiful coastal
regions. Working with a bold palette and energetic brush strokes,
Runquist enjoys painting vivid urban landscapes, architecture
and coastal scenes.
"Mark and I have a different painting style. When painting
on location it has been fun to see how each of us interprets the
same scene or what makes us stop and take a second look,"
says Runquist. "Typically Mark may be drawn
to the oyster harvester while I may find more interest in the
simplicity or the abstract quality of the oyster alone. He has
an amazing talent for capturing the serenity of the beautiful
places in our diverse community".
Runquist participates in many juried shows and exhibits including
the annual Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Exhibition. She is a member
of the Oil Painters of America, The Charleston Outdoor Painters
Association and The International Plein Air Painters Association.
Mark Kelvin Horton grew up in a rural community
in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Settling in the Lowcountry
after an 18 year advertising career in New York City, his
paintings reflect the influence of countless hours spent
in New York's museums and galleries studying master works of art.
Horton is influenced by the realism of Winslow Homer, the emotion
of George Inness and the romantic landscapes of the Hudson River
School painters.
"Being primarily a studio painter, it is exciting to paint
on location with Shannon and experience the beauty of our region
while we each interpret it in different ways," says Horton. "She
is a master at getting directly to the essence and beauty of each
subject, whether it's a simple doorway or a bustling cityscape."
Horton is co-owner of the Mark Kelvin Horton Studio Gallery and Horton Hayes Fine Art. He is also represented by City Art Gallery in Greenville, NC, and Paradise Gallery in Boca Grande, FL. His paintings hang in numerous private and corporate collections.
