December Issue 2006
Corrigan Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Sue Simons Wallace
Corrigan
Gallery LLC in Charleston, SC, is proud to present a solo show
entitled, Fresh Fish, consisting of new works by Sue Simons
Wallace. The show opens Dec. 1 and continues through Dec. 15,
2006.
Wallace began printing fish over 16 years ago after viewing an
exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art of works by the Japanese
masters. Having a fisherman in the house at that time aided her
adventure into the world of translating shimmering fresh fish
into ethereal, permanent, non-odiferous creations. The Japanese
process of "gyotaku" or fish rubbings is legioned to
have begun when fish tales were in doubt. Paper and ink was placed
on the fishing boats so the catch for the day could be documented.
It has become a specialized artform used by masters down to the
nursery school art teachers. Wallace's prints are a true treat
for the eye.
After laborious preparations of the fish for printing, Wallace
goes about creating a unique print with a contemporary twist.
She will later finish the prints with handapplied details for
the eyes and color touches for the fins. There is an ancient fossil
like look to many of her prints. They are a wonderful balance
between an elegant, understated look and a refreshingly contemporary
presentation of an old tradition. These fine art prints are unique
collectibles.
Corrigan Gallery LLC opened in September 2005 presenting art with
a future and backed by intellectual process. Located in the heart
of the historic district, the gallery combines the charm of the
old city of Charleston with a look to the future. Paintings, drawings,
fine art prints, photography and sculpture can be seen. Artists
represented include Manning Williams, Candice Flewharty, Kevin
Bruce Parent, Lolly Koon, John Moore, Beverly Derrick, Kristi
Ryba, Sue Simons Wallace, Daryl Knox, Karin Olah and Lese Corrigan.
