Furman University in Greenville, SC, Offers Works by Katya Cohen
Qualia, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Katya Cohen, a faculty member at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, will be on display in Furman University's Thompson Gallery through Dec. 15, 2006.
Cohen is a graduate of the College of William and Mary, and holds BFA and MFA degrees from Syracuse University and the University of Georgia, respectively. She has held numerous exhibitions throughout the Upstate and the Southeast, and has previously taught at Anderson College, Clemson University and the University of Georgia.
"When I paint, I invent barriers: pictorial, conceptual and physical constraints that, like the process of printmaking, add a distancing element to the process of painting," Cohen says in her artist's statement. "This strategy allows me to distance myself from the image and to view my content more objectively, almost as if the content were the process itself."
