Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Arbon Lane
The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, is presenting an African American folk art exhibition entitled, A Black Man Speaks: The Paintings and Poetry of Arbon Lane. Sponsored by The Friends of Arbon Lane, the exhibition is being presented in the third floor Mezzanine Gallery, on view through Apr. 15, 2007.
Lane, a self-taught artist, began his career
in the basement of an Atlantic City, NJ, apartment building with
leftover paint and a window shade. He returned to North Carolina
and continued to develop his talent. Many of his early works are
bold, sweeping and most often spiritual, resembling Baroque religious
paintings of the European masters.
Over time, Lane's artistic form came into its own, having the
more intimate feel of folk art with his signature "Arbon
Lane" style. Lane painted his life, he painted what he knew,
he painted for the people that came to appreciate his work.
Married and the father of four sons, Lane was born and died in
his hometown of Reidsville, NC. Though selected works have been
on exhibition and in personal collections throughout the United
States, A Black Man Speaks is the most comprehensive presentation
of work from the entirety of his career.
The Hickory Museum of Art is a United Arts Funded Affiliate of the United Arts Council of Catawba County and is located in the "SALT Block" Arts & Science Center of Catawba Valley.
