NC Museum of Natural Sciences' Nature Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC, Features Exhibit by Members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators
The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) returns to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences' Nature Art Gallery in Raleigh, NC, for a group show on view from Dec. 1 through Jan. 28, 2007. Twenty-six of the 60 current guild members will be exhibiting all facets of nature (plants, animals, bones, shells, etc.) in the new show entitled, From Observation to Illustration.
The exhibition will encompass a variety of styles and media from traditional scientific illustration to fine art. Watercolor, pen/ink, colored/graphite pencil, scratch board or a combination of any of these are typically used to produce these works.
The collective resumé of the 26 featured artists include publication in field guides, state and national magazines and environmental/conservation periodicals and journals including The Guide to Frogs and Toads of NC, Field Guide to Mammals of North America, and NC Wildlife. Individual members have also done illustrative work for zoos, museums, botanical gardens and universities.
GNSI-Carolinas is the regional chapter of the
national GNSI which is based in Washington DC, at the Museum of
Natural History, Smithsonian Institute. The guild, which exhibits
regularly as a group, was last at the Museum's Nature Art Gallery
in summer 2004.
The membership of GNSI-Carolinas consists of artists from North
and South Carolina who are employed as illustrators or genuinely
interested in scientific illustration. They host workshops twice
a year on subjects ranging from illustrative techniques to ethics
in business. Though their accomplishments vary they all share
a love of natural science and the environment and possess a strong
desire to share it with others for their enjoyment and/or education.
