Toe River Studio Tour in Western North Carolina Takes Place Dec. 2 & 3, 2006

The mountains of Mitchell and Yancey Counties of Wertern North Carolina are home to some of the top artists and craftspeople in America. From 10am in the morning until 5pm in the evening on both days, around 125 artisans will open their studio doors and welcome the public to see their workplaces during the Wnter Toe River Studio Tour, on Dec. 2 and 3, 2006.

Whether you want contemporary or traditional two- or three-dimensional, to look at or to use, you'll find a wide selection to choose fron, map in hand, you follow the crafts trail set out for the tour sponsored by the Toe River Arts Council. Some years the weather is mild, yet invigorating, other years, the skies fill with clouds and the rain is enough to make us grateful we aren't shoveling the precipitation. Either way, the studios are warm with welcome. Some even offer food and drink.

The variety and quality of the art and craft seen on the Toe River Studio Tour is unmatched. Artists and craftsmen in almost every medium open their studios for the tour and most offer a broad selection and price range. Many are well known whilr others are new to the tour. Bright red arrowed Tour signs point the way from studio to studio taking visitors into some of the most scenic and unusual parts of the mountains. A free map briefly describes who and what you will see when you get there so you can plan your route. The Tour takes place in and around the towns of Burnsville, Celo, Spruce Pine, Little Switzerland and Bakersville, NC.

Examples of Tour participants' work is on display at the Toe River Arts Council's Gallery at 269 Oak Avenue in Spruce Pine, NC, on view through Dec. 24, 2006.

"We're developing a broad reputation as a first class arts event," says Denise Cook, executive director of the Toe River Arts Council. "People come from all over the country to buy from artists whose work they have seen in galleries and museums in New York, Washington, DC, Chicago, Atlanta, or San Francisco. Names they have seen over and over in books on art glass, pottery, fiber art and basketry are here."
