City of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Tina Hirsig

The City of Charleston's City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre, temporarily housed on the second floor at the Gaillard Auditorium in Charleston, will present the exhibit, Mapping Our Place, featuring works by Charleston artist, Tina Hirsig. The exhibit opens on Dec. 12 and continues through Jan. 9, 2008.

Hirsig grew up in Wheaton, IL. After graduating from college she moved to Boston, MA, where she attended the art studio program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. This experience solidified her commitment to the arts and arts education. Working as a public school art teacher Hirsig gained the knowledge and experience in art education, arts advocacy, as well as maintaining a studio practice. In 2003, Hirsig moved to Charleston and has since been balancing graduate school at Goddard College, teaching at Murray-LaSaine Elementary School on James Island, SC, maintaining a studio practice at Redux Contemporary Art Center, and parenting two young sons.

Hirsig offers the following comments about her work: "While driving in the car over the James Island Connector, my two children in the back of the car started asking questions. 'Where does the ocean end?', 'Where is space?', 'Who named it space?', and 'Where do trees come from?'. Their questions reflect how they are figuring out their place in the world. Seeking answers for them has made me reflect deeply about culture, consumerism, inequalities, privilege, the environment, beauty, education and my place in all of it as a mother."

"Curiosity has lead to exploration and map making. It is this curiosity of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going that I seek for my family and myself," continues Hirsig. "Looking at maps and how they interpret the world through a variety of lenses has inspired this series of work. From street maps, GPS maps, constellation maps, maps of testing in education, my children's maps, mapped patterns in nature, to my own drawn maps. This work is my response to how I map my past, present, and future. It is a continuous map of our place."
