December Issue 2007

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Virginia Scotchie and Boris Bally

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting and exhibition of works by Virginia Scotchie and Boris Bally. The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 21, 2007.

Virginia Scotchie

Virginia Scotchie is a ceramic sculptor and head of Ceramics at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. Her work refers to organic shapes found in everyday life. Combining shapes with colorful glazes and metallic finishes, her current body of work is influenced by the artist's recent residency in Xian, China. Her pieces function as individual objects or often may be grouped to form larger installations.

Scotchie holds a BFA in Ceramics from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and in 1985 she completed her Master of Fine Arts from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She was the recipient of the prestigious Sydney Meyer Fund International Ceramics Award, Victoria, Australia in 2002.  This past summer she was honored with an invitational teaching position in Xian, China, and as Scotchie has said, it greatly influenced her current work.

Boris Bally

This show also combines recycled street signs, handpicked by Boris Bally for their thickness, condition, color, and graphic quality. These industrial-strength pieces celebrate a raw American street look. They are as tactile and beautiful as they are strong and unique. Bally says "Signage has become my passionate medium of choice not only because of the recycling message, but also its appeal to me as an extreme variation on the age-old tradition of enameling." There is the hint of Pop Art in this work as well, with great humor.

Bally's education includes time as an Intensive Goldsmith Apprenticeship, Alexander Schaffner Goldschmied, Basel, Switzerland, followed by two years at the Tyler School of Art, and completing his BFA at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1984. His work is found in many museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; The American Craft Museum, New York; the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte; the Brooklyn Museum; and the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburg.
