The Art Institute of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Dr. Katherine Houghton

The Art Institute of Charleston in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, A Journey of Discovery: Women and Children Around the World, featuring works by international photographer, Dr. Katherine Houghton. The exhibition will be on view through Jan. 4, 2009.

The Art Institute of Charleston and the Center for Women proudly co-sponsor a photography exhibit by Dr. Katherine M. Houghton that profoundly explores women and children around the globe. Houghton circumnavigated the world twice on a mission to capture this visual story.

Dr. Houghton offers the following about this exhibit, "The purpose of my photography is not to impose my worldview, but rather expose others to multiple views and layers of the lives of women and children. Encountering the visual is a never-ending process that has neither beginning nor ending, instead it seeks to discover, uncover, and recover imagery.  Therefore, I invite the viewer to experience glimpses of the lives of these women and children by seeing, reflecting upon, and experiencing my photographs."

Earlier this year, Houghton was the Interim Academic Dean at the Art Institute of Charleston and is currently the Interim Academic Dean at The Art Institute of Cincinnati. She combines her Fine Arts background with her commitment to providing access to higher education for a diversity of learners. She has been featured as a keynote speaker and presenter on topics including leadership in higher education, multicultural programming, students with invisible handicaps, higher education and single motherhood, and global issues impacting women and children. Houghton's most recent scholarly pursuits combine her background as a photographer, extensive international travel, expertise in qualitative research, and commitment to furthering the cause of underrepresented women and children around the world.

President of The Art Institute of Charleston Richard Jerue said, "This is an extraordinary show by a very talented artist and educator. We're proud that she has been an important part of our education team for the past year, and we are very honored to be able to work with the Center for Women to bring Katherine's work to Charleston."

Houghton has worked in higher education administration on land and sea for over twenty years in both the United States and Caribbean. She has circumnavigated the world twice as administrator on the Semester at Sea program, University of Pittsburgh, and Institute for Shipboard Education. Houghton was Dean of Academic Administration and Student Affairs at Ross University School of Medicine, Island of Dominica, West Indies.  While she was the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA, she established an awarding-winning residential program for single mothers and their children.

Jennet Alterman, director and founder of the Center for Women says, "We are collaborating with The Art Institute of Charleston to co-sponsor this wonderful exhibit that brings attention to the lives of women around the globe. Katherine's eye for cultural context allows the viewer to understand the complexities of these women's challenges."

The Art Institute of Charleston offers both associate's and bachelor's degrees (depending on the area of study) and offers programs in culinary arts, graphics design, interior design, web design & interactive media, photographic imaging, fashion & retail management and digital filmmaking & video production.

The Art Institute of Charleston is one of The Art Institutes, a system of over 40 education institutions located throughout North America, providing an important source of design, media arts, fashion and culinary arts professionals.
