Wanda Steppe
Harriet Marshall Goode
Carolina Gallery, on Morgan Square in 1downtown Spartanburg, SC, will present an exhibit of paintings by Rock Hill, SC, artists Harriet Marshall Goode and Wanda Steppe, on view from Dec. 4 through Jan. 5, 2009.
Goode, a painter for over 50 years, chooses personal metaphors that relate to the condition of women. Women who find themselves in situations they find unacceptable, but never the less, choose to remain, are often subjects for her work. There are also paintings that express the pure joy of being a happy woman. Goode invites viewers to create their own stories from the life dramas and visual short stories on her canvases.
Steppe's work addresses the passage of time and the uncertainty and fragility of life. Using symbols that are open to interpretation, she attempts to make sense of the twists and turns in life by creating a personal mythology influenced by magic realist literature and the balance of imagination and reality.
Goode and Steppe have often shown their work in tandem but this is their first dual exhibition in Spartanburg.
