Carrboro Town
Hall in Carrboro, NC, Features Works by Kimberly Alvis
The Carrboro Town Hall in Carrboro, NC, is presenting an exhibit of recent works by Kimberly Alvis, on view through Dec. 31, 2008.
Alvis is an accomplished artist represented in the Triangle area by Somerhill Gallery in Durham.
According to Somerhill director Joseph Rowand, Alvis' work exhibits "a style reminiscent of the 17th century Dutch and Spanish masters. We encounter with Kim's work an artist who celebrates the past, deploying paint and light to exquisitely delineate her own compositions." Rowand considers the artist's work "her own fresh masterpieces."
Alvis uses traveling to inspire her prolific body of representational paintings. She's been to Europe many times on quests for subject matter. Most recently, she journeyed to Sedona, AZ.
The predominately oil-on-linen pieces included in the Carrboro show retell elements of the landscape that captivated her in the various places where she has traveled.
"I take every opportunity I can to travel," Alvis explained. "I do watercolor sketches on site, or photographs, then recreate them in oil back in my studio. It's important for me to actually see what I'm painting myself originally not just to rely on someone else's images. Otherwise there is a big gap in the information I have to work with."
Originally from Staten Island, NY, Alvis has exhibited her work nationally at such venues as The Art Students League, The Salmagundi Club and the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, all in New York City, and the Huntsman Fine Arts Gallery in Aspen, CO.
Alvis' representational art has received numerous awards, including Best In Show two years in a row from The Arts Students League Annual Student Exhibition in New York City.
Carrboro Town Hall on West Main Street and the Century Center, a meeting an events center on North Greensboro Street, regularly host art exhibits featuring local and international artists through the efforts of the Carrboro Art Committee. Artists are invited to submit their work for review by the Arts Committee for display in public buildings for specified exhibits.
