Lowcountry Artists
in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Lynda English and Lynne Hardwick
Lowcountry Artists, Ltd., in Charleston, SC, will present a dual exhibition of works by Lynda English and Lynne Hardwick on view from Dec. 1 - 31, 2008.
From an early age Lynda English has appreciated nature in all its aspects, with a special fondness for the birds of our region. This love has inspired a body of work, Coastal Birds, which features egrets, blue and tri-color herons as well as the state bird, the Carolina Wren.
An award winning artist in watercolor, English is also quite accomplished in other media. The exhibit includes works in oil, colored pencil, and watercolor, all presented in non-traditional methods. Many of the watercolors are shown on Twinrocker paper, a specialized, handmade variety, which is often made to the individual artists specifications. Others are painted on Yupo, a plastic paper, which has no absorbency. Needless to say this affords many unplanned effects. Coastal Birds may be a common theme, but is presented in most uncommon ways.
Lynn Hardwick's series, Time Traveler, has been several years in the making. It has been based on her extensive travels and great interest in cultural sacred places.
This summer took her back to the American west for several weeks and an immersion in the traditions of the Native Americans and their symbolism. She was particularly inspired by the vision quest, a spiritual journey one might go on, often into the wilderness, to find life's meaning or direction.
Hardwick has brought back many of these symbols and feelings to use in her abstract and non-objective work. Each of her paintings has great meaning for her, many of which she is delighted to share with viewers. However, the nature of this fascinating work invites the viewer to bring his own experience to bear. This adds greatly to the universality of these works.
This year in the spirit of holiday gift giving all ten of the artists at Lowcountry Artists have donated a painting to Pattison's Academy. For a donation of as little as $5, patrons could win one of the 10 original works of art. The framed pieces are on display at the gallery and range in value from $195-$900. The artists, Norma Ballentine, Rick Dean, Lynda English, Dawn Caldwell, Lynne Hardwick, Rana Jordhal, Anne Hightower-Patterson, Joni Purk, Bonnie Stabler, and Jackie Wukela, are very excited to have the ability to give an array of magnificently done original artwork to this deserving program for severely disabled children.
Pattison's Academy was formed to offer individualized programs of therapy and early education to children with severe, multiple handicaps. All proceeds benefit Pattison's Academy. Drawings for the winners of the donated paintings will be held on Dec. 23, 2008.
