Nested in Carrboro, NC, Features Works by Robert Walton

Nested in Carrboro, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Washington to Carrboro, featuring the photography of Robert Walton, on view through Jan. 31, 2009. The exhibit is a series of photographs representing two towns captured by a single perspective.

"When I first moved to Carrboro, I was immediately struck by how different it was from the town I left behind. And with a broad view, it's certainly true: Washington and Carrboro do not outwardly look alike," says Walton.

"But as different as these places may be, when the focus is on details and moments rather than geography and demographics, I believe they are not quite so distinct. Certainly no two places are alike, but the people who make them up can never be wholly different."

"I have always wanted my photography to highlight the qualities people share, rather than the differences between them. Common experiences fascinate me far more than divisions and contrasts."

Walton also adds, "My view of Washington was never about the government or the marble monuments. Despite its high profile, the city is still home to half a million people who live otherwise ordinary lives. When you lay my photographs of Washington next to those of my new home in Carrboro, I believe you have a choice to see either the similarities or the differences."

Walton is a photographer and writer who in 2007 moved to Carrboro, after spending eight years in Washington, DC. He writes about energy and business issues for a series of industry publications, in addition to pursuing more artistic endeavors.

Walton is 32 years-old, and thus far has worked as a waiter, janitor, freelance photographer, obituary writer, professional poker player and policy reporter. He has a journalism degree from the University of South Carolina and a culinary arts diploma from the Art Institute of Washington. He twice won the SC Divisional Men's Fencing Championship.

In 2005, Walton received a grant from the District of Columbia to document change and gentrification in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. In 2006, he self-published a book of poems and short fiction titled Twelve Dreams: a transcription.

Walton is also a lousy painter and a hopeful baker.
