December Issue 2008

University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Adam Shiverdecker

The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Abaddon: Keepers of the Abyss ..., featuring ceramic sculptures by Adam Shiverdecker, on view in McMaster Gallery in the Department of Art through Dec. 2, 2008.

This exhibition, Shiverdecker's MFA thesis exhibit explores governmental and political issues through ancient mythological characters drawn from Christianity and Greek mythology. His wire and clay sculptures of submarines, airplanes and an aircraft carrier hover above the ground, indicating the instability of war machines and their phantom qualities. The exhibition also includes an American flag piece that challenges the objective symbol of unity and disparity.

Shiverdecker's work has been shown throughout the Southeast and Midwest. He was included in the South Carolina State Museum's 20th Anniversary Juried Exhibition. He has recently worked on an international museum project in China and was a visiting researcher at Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. He holds a BA from the University of Toledo and will be graduating with his MFA in Studio Art from USC in December. Following graduation he will be moving to Philadelphia to fulfill an artist-in-residence position at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University.
