Works by Israeli Children at Cleveland Community College

Cleveland Community College in Shelby, NC, will host the exhibit, The Art and Soul of Peace Through Humor, through Feb. 23.

The exhibit is a compilation of works from Israeli children collected by Maureen Kushner. For nearly two years, Kushner, an educator from NY, visited 23 Israeli schools from Northern Galilee to the Southern Negev at the invitation of the Israeli Ministry of Education.

Using an unique teaching method that incorporates humor, Kushner was able to break down barriers and create a trusting environment between Jewish, Arab, Druze, and Bedouin children, as well as Ethiopian and Russian immigrants. During the workshops, her students communicated their deepest feelings and fears through word association and art. The murals and paintings produced in her classes reflect a myriad of cultural and social values and express hopes for a new peace that reaches beyond the shadow of war.
