Davidson College Galleries Feature Works by John Monteith and Adam Straus in Davidson, NC
The evocative landscapes of Adam Straus and the challenging collages of John Monteith are on display to the public through Mar. 3 in the Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center at Davidson College in Davidson, NC.
Adam Straus has built a career on the landfills and trashheaps of American culture. Living and working in New York City since 1990, he filters his highly-charged landscapes through a lens of black humor about the fearful effects of continued environmental degradation, over-population, and rampant commercial development. His beautiful landscapes attract the viewer, then reveal the dark side of man's insistence on taming nature. By framing some works in heavy lead or steel, he heightens the sense of irony.
Straus received his M.F.A. in 1982 from Florida State University and has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of a Southern Arts Federation/NEA Grant, and was the subject of an Apr. 1999 feature article in ArtNews. He is represented by Nohra Haime Gallery in New York City.
The work of self-taught artist John Monteith is highly sophisticated and impeccably crafted. Monteith gleans portraits from high school and college yearbooks, then photographically layers the images, draws on them, and manipulates them to produce an absurd cast of characters.
Monteith represented the US in the 1997 Lyon Biennale. His work has been featured in Art of the X-files", Blind Spot and Graphis Fine Art Photo magazines. He is represented by Ricco/Maresca Gallery in New York City.
