Quilts at the Arts Center of Henderson County, Hendersonville, NC
The Arts Center of Henderson County, Inc. proudly presents its opening exhibition of 2000: QUILTS: The Art of the Heart - Design of the Mind. The quilts will be on view from Feb. 12 through Apr. 1.
The three quilters featured are leaders in the USA Quilt Art Movement. They have exhibited extensively both, nationally and internationally. Sylvia Einstein was born in Switzerland and came to the USA in the late 1960's. She began exploring textile techniques and made her first quilt in 1975. For Einstein quilting is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit: "Quilts have a long history and a language of their own...I am joining the many women who have written their diaries in cloth".
Nancy Halpern was one of the early leaders in the Quilt Revival Movement of the 1970's. Halpern thinks of her quilts as "conversation" pieces: "The idea of conversation -mine with quilts during their making, the quilts with each other, and finally the quilts with you the viewer" has become the basis of her exhibits. Ruth McDowell began her quilting career in 1972. Since then she has become a full time professional quilt artist, with over 300 quilts to her credit. The art quilts of McDowell represent a sustained and extraordinary development over time, intertwining the themes of nature, geometry, the piecing medium, and an abiding love of fabrics.
It is with the help of our local renowned quilter, Georgia Bonesteel, that we were able to arrange an exhibition of this quality. Two of Bonesteel's quilts will also be on view. We are very grateful to her for this opportunity.
Quilting is one of the Mountain Traditions of Western North Carolina, a skill which has always flourished in this area. The Arts Center of Henderson County, Inc. hopes that this exhibition of Quilt Art will be an exploration of new forms this old tradition is taking.
We are fortunate to have an excellent permanent Quilt Collection displayed at First Citizens Bank, directly across the street from The Arts Center. We hope the viewer will explore the historic collection there in conjunction with the contemporary quilts in The Art Center's exhibit, to gain a more complete understanding of our wonderful quilting heritage through the last Century. Perhaps the quilters viewing this exhibition will be inspired to create, for future exhibits, the quilts of the new millennium!
There is no admission charge for the exhibition. Docents led tours and special coordinating programs will be available.
