The Wells Gallery Features Work by John Hulsey

The opening exhibition for the year 2000 at The Wells Gallery in historic Charleston, SC, begins with Oceans, an exhibit of works by nationally known watercolor artist John Hulsey, opening Feb. 18. The exhibition will continue through Mar. 17.

The Kansas born artist displays both watercolor and oil paintings inspired by the range of light on Carolina coastal scenes. He has the extraordinary ability to capture the Lowcountry skies and all of their intensity. Though born and raised in Kansas, he has painted all over the country from the mountains to the oceans, and the Charleston coast draws him back several times a year for extended stays. "Some experiences so exceed our expectations that words can fail us. These take time to process; the images can be too bright, too interesting or too complex to be understood at first. Sometimes they must be filtered through the lens of the subconscious for a time and vulcanized by the fires of the imagination before they can emerge as art. No one really knows exactly how this artistic alchemy works, but I suspect it is a kind of dance between the conscious and the unconscious, which, when the music is right, produces a work of transcendence" explains Hulsey.

The artist's reception will be held Feb. 18 from 5:30 to 8:30pm.

The next exhibit at The Wells Gallery will feature the works of Betty Anglin Smith. The exhibit will begin on Mar. 17.
