February Issue 2001
Theatre Art Galleries in High Point, NC, Feature New Exhibitions
Theatre Art Galleries (TAG) in High Point, NC, is hosting exhibits by outstanding painters, David Wilson from Hillsborough, NC, and Lisa Creed from Durham, NC. The exhibits will be on view through Feb. 28. Also exhibiting at this time is a juried show by the High Point Fine Art Guild in TAG's Gallery C.
David Wilson
David Wilson's exhibit, Top Shelf, displays
an array of dynamic paintings and exquisite drawings in TAG's
Main Gallery. Working mostly with figurative themes, Wilson's
drawing are intricate, beautifully detailed compositions. His
paintings also deal mostly with figures either involved with daily
tasks, music or sports. These vividly colored pieces celebrate
the active vibrancy and intimacy of life.
Currently residing in Hillsborough, Wilson was born in Clarksburg,
WV, and received a BA in Art from Hampton University. With a background
as a graphic designer, he has worked with the Chrysler Museum,
Essence Magazine, Upscale Magazine, and Wellspring
Whole Foods. In 1999 he received a special invitation by the US
Army to speak and present his work throughout Germany during Black
History Month. Last winter, Wilson designed the official poster
for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Associations annual basketball
tournament. The exciting original painting for this poster, Up
for Grabs, will be on display for this exhibit. He has exhibited
widely in the Durham and Raleigh, NC, area, and this is his first
major exhibit in the Piedmont Triad area.
Lisa Creed
Durham painter Lisa Creed is exhibiting her work in Light Returns in Gallery B. As winter progresses and the days grow longer, so reflects the vibrancy of Creed's abstract paintings. Creed layers thick paint onto canvas or wood to portray densely textured abstract image. These images or forms express the artist's internal and external worlds and reach out to the viewer to employ their own personal response. Originally from Maine, Creed received her Masters degree in Visual Art from North Carolina State University and makes her home in Durham. She was awarded a Wurlitzer Foundation Fellowship for Taos, New Mexico in 1999 and an Emerging Artist Grant from the Durham Arts Council in 1998. Her work is currently on exhibit at UNC-G's Weatherspoon Art Gallery's "Art on Paper 2000". She has exhibited at Green Tara Gallery, Chapel Hill, NC, Wake Forest University and the Green Hill Center for NC Art.
