From Warhol to Pop and Back Again - About the Weatherspoon Art Gallery
The Weatherspoon Art Gallery at the University of North Carolina Greensboro enjoys a national reputation for its outstanding collection and exhibitions. The permanent collection of more than 5,000 objects is one of the finest in the Southeast. Willem de Kooning, Louise Nevelson, Robert Rauschenberg, Alexander Calder, Andy Warhol, Robert Colescott and Cindy Sherman are just a few of the recognized artists represented. Other highlights include the Dillard Collection of Art on Paper, the Cone Collection of Matisse prints and bronzes and the Lenoir C. Wright collection of Japanese woodblock prints.
The annual schedule of 15-20 exhibitions includes works from the permanent collection and travelling exhibitions featuring emerging and recognized contemporary artists as well as important artistic developments of the twentieth century onward. The Falk Visiting Artist program brings three nationally recognized artists to the gallery to exhibit and interact with the university art department and general public. Educational programs including lectures, gallery tours and films provide visitors with the opportunity to explore modern and contemporary art and contemporary issues. Family offerings introduce children and their parents to hands-on art making activities and The Art of Learning, an interactive tour of exhibitions.
