The Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, Front Gallery Presents Prints By Phil Murray

The Asheville Area Arts Council Front Gallery, in Asheville, NC, will present prints by Phil Murray the month of Feb. 2002. A graduate from Rhode Island School of Design, Murray comes from a tremendous print-making background of 30 years. His work is strongly influenced by Robert Motherwell's prints and philosophy.

Murray says, "Robert Motherwell's work influenced me because he believed that his process was an interaction between his 'eye and his inner eye.' I believe that his process transforms the art into substantial meaning for all viewers, as it comes from within me. The viewer garners his own interpretation from my work, which pleases me".

Murray is currently a professor at Mars Hill College. His students are energized by his enthusiasm for print making in the classroom. He known as a "seer" by his students and they appreciate his vision.

Murray continues, "My printmaking and drawings are a dialogue with myself First the paper invites me to initiate an interaction. I make a mark that may become something we can identify and recognize from our visual world... I continue with adding subtracting, inserting or combining numerous visual elements. Shapes emerge from my manipulation and change my feelings of what the piece is about."
