City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Presents Works by Janan Batteh
The City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of photographs by local artist Janan Batteh, Feb. 8 through Mar.8, 2002, entitled Interactions.
Janan Batteh is a fine art photographer. She began studying photography at the College of Charleston where she obtained a BA in Studio Art and Communication Studies. In 1998, she worked at a professional photography lab as a color and black and white printer. She currently works at a local hotel as a Convention Services Manager. However, she has been dedicated to building up a portfolio documenting people's interaction with herself and others in their native environment.
Batteh comments on her work: "I begin my photographic journey alone, but observation eventually leads to interaction. I intentionally seek out unique situations and invite myself to become part of the subjects environment. Relying only on my verbal and non-verbal communication skills; I am able to shape the unfolding of each event. Ultimately, the end result is determined by my subjects' reactions to my presence. I feel the exchange is equal. They allow me to document a moment in their lives, and I leave an impression. I am in a constant struggle with obstacles such as language barriers, differences in communication styles, and cultural stereotypes. By approaching unfamiliar subjects, I am given an opportunity to document their interactions with myself, with others, and the variables in their native environment."
