February Issue 2002
Francis Marion University in Florence, SC, Features Works by Steven Hewitt and Vanessa Hewitt Grubbs
The Francis Marion University in Florence, SC, Art Gallery Series is featuring ceramics by Steven Hewitt and Vanessa Hewitt Grubbs through Mar. 1, 2002.
The exhibitions, Past, Present, Future Landscapes?, by Steven Hewitt and Vessel Forms, by Vanessa Hewitt Grubbs are on display in the Hyman Fine Arts Center Gallery on the FMU campus. The exhibits are open to the public free of charge.
"The use of textured glazes allow the surfaces to be built up, raked through, chipped and altered through multi-firings and multiple applications of textured glazes," Hewitt said of his work. "The viewer is allowed to decide if the image is of an aerial view of ancient/modern architectural elements, a symbol, or just a nonsense form. The viewer must decide."
"The writings (on my vessel forms) are from American and Japanese literature, along with my own poetry," said Hewitt Grubbs. "Each of these pieces is one of a kind, and each has its own hidden meanings and messages. My goal for my work is to incorporate the beauty of written words with strong images of beautiful people."
