February Issue 2002
Furman University in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Elizabeth Greenberg
An exhibit of photographs by Elizabeth Greenberg, director of photography programs for The Maine Photographic Workshops, will be on display Feb. 4 - 25 in the Thompson Gallery of Furman University's Roe Art Building in Greenville, SC.
"I photograph what is not there in reality, but exists in my mind whenever I am in a state of reverie," Greenberg has written of her work. "Oftentimes the photographs allude to a fictitious past."
Greenberg has worked as an assistant and studio manager for Arnold Newman, a legendary photographer who has photographed a number of US presidents, including John F. Kennedy and Jimmy Carter. Greenberg also worked on Newman's archives and his most recent retrospective book. Her freelance work has included assisting noted photographers Mary Ellen Mark and Jose Picayo, as well as spending four years with commercial food photographer Judd Pilossof.
In 1994, Greenberg began teaching photography at The New School for Social Research and at The Maine Photographic Workshops, where she spent a number of summers as a seasonal staff member. She became a member of the resident faculty at The Workshops, now Rockport College, in 1997.
Greenberg's education includes a bachelor's degree in photography from Rhode Island School of Design and a master's degree in visual arts from Vermont College.
