The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, Releases Its Collection of African American Art on CD-ROM

On Feb. 19 the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, will release a new CD-ROM entitled, African American Artists in the Collection of the Gibbes Museum of Art. The CD-ROM, which has been a year and a half in the making, was developed as a learning tool and is being provided to all tri-county schools for use in the classroom. The CD-ROM is also being distributed to branches of the Charleston County Public Library system.

"We hope to reach thousands of students and teachers through this CD-ROM," said Curator of Education Amy Watson Smith. "It's a wonderful way to teach school children about African American art, particularly at a time when many schools are cutting out field trips."

Extraordinary effort has gone into the CD-ROM project, which not only showcases the Gibbes's African American collection, but also offers an opportunity to learn more about some of the artists through interviews. The Gibbes Education Department joined with a key group of community-based organizations to complete the project. The Community Foundation, which provided start-up funding, Mary Anne Henry of Henry Ryan Films, who wrote the script and managed the production along with cinematographer Frost Wilkinson, and Qi Virtual Marketing which provided graphic design and computer programming.

"We were able to get up close and personal with the artists during the interview sessions," said Mary Anne Henry. "It was so interesting to hear real stories from such talented people, many of whom overcame adversity to become nationally and internationally known in the art world. This CD-ROM is a treasure for the Gibbes and this community."

Artists represented on the CD-ROM include Mary Jackson, whose sweetgrass baskets were recently on display in the Smithsonian Institution, Charlestonian Edwin Harleston, Jonathan Green, Tarlton Blackwell and Romare Bearden, just to name a few.

The CD-ROM will be for sale in the Gibbes Shop for $21.95 and distribution begins Feb. 19, 2002.
