February Issue 2002
Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Features Works by Three New Artists
The Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, introduces
three new artists in an exciting new exhibition entitled, .Works
on Paper, opening Feb. 1 and continuing through Mar. 16, 2002.
Trinity Behrends, Guntram Gersch and Harrison Haynes will exhibit
a variety of fascinating abstract and representational art in
acrylic, watercolor and mixed media.
Each artist has interesting ties to the Tryon community. Behrends'
father is the distinguished sculptor William Behrends, a Tryon
resident whose work can be seen coast to coast. Trinity Behrends
also lives in Tryon. Her abstract subject matter combines beautiful
and sensitive drawing with a style defined by "wild abandonment."
The influence of Robert Rauschenberg is evident.
Guntram Gersch divides his time between Tryon and a home in France. Characterized by bold colors and geometric forms or free-flowing shapes, Gersch's paintings are distinctly modern. His work has been compared to the great abstract painter Hans Hofmann. Gersch has exhibited in Switzerland, England, Belgium, Germany and the United States.
Harrison Haynes' family goes back several generations in Tryon and includes several well-known artists. Haynes, who lives in New York City, has exhibited in North Carolina, the Northeast and Italy. Often working from photographs that capture an "accidental moment," Haynes creates landscapes and portraits that convey a nostalgic, moody atmosphere.
The artists will give a "walk and talk"
tour of their art on Feb. 3 at 2pm.
