Diversity in Art Celebrated at The Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC

The Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, will present a unique exhibition through March 1. Three artists from different areas of North Carolina will bring their talents together for this exhibit.

In the Winkler Gallery, Vandorn Hinnant of Greensboro will exhibit works in acrylic and prismacolor. His exhibit, titled ARTiculation/ARTifaction features vibrant, fractal images that can only be described as mystical.

Hinnant's original works are in numerous private and corporate collections throughout America and some works are in Europe and Africa. He has guest-curated exhibitions, served as juror for many fine art competitions, and guest lectured at colleges and universities. He has served as an education consultant working with both youth and adult learners. Currently the artist is serving as curator for the Mattye Reed African Heritage Center at NC A&T State University in Greensboro.

The Vickery Gallery will house A Celebration of Diversity works by Bud Caywood and Leon Woods. Bud Caywood of Hickory works with plaster to create his unique works. Each image is hung with an original poem written by the artist.

Bud Caywood has been creating art and word in North Carolina for more than thirty years. He has won numerous awards and participated in many solo and group exhibitions. He currently resides in Hickory, NC, and is a freelance furniture designer.

Caywood is active in the arts community and is a member at Full Circle Arts in Hickory, NC. In addition to painting and working in mixed media, Caywood is also a poet. Morris Publishing published his first book of poetry title BLUE in 2001. Each of his paintings is displayed with a correlating poem. His book of poetry will be available during the February exhibit.

Bud Caywood says, "Art is a voice. Art is not alive on the canvas. It is dormant. it becomes alive in the eyes of the beholder."

Leon Woods of Winston-Salem will exhibit his woodcarvings. He takes much of his inspiration and influence from traditional African woodcarving.

"With each piece, I push myself to the next level, I'm harder on myself than anyone, but I feel that I haven't even come halfway to reaching my full potential", says Woods.

Leon Woods was born in Kingstree, SC and raised in Winston Salem, NC. He graduated from the fine arts program at Winston-Salem State University. He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the state. Woods currently resides in Winston-Salem and is an assistant at the Diggs Gallery.

This exhibit is sponsored in part by the Wilkes County Bar Association and grassroots funding from the North Carolina Arts Council.
