February Issue 2003

Church Street Inn Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Natalie Reed

The Church Street Inn Gallery in Charleston, SC, will host an exhibit of original paintings by internationally recognized artist, Natalie Reed from Feb. 1 through Mar. 1, 2003. The large scale works are from her African Wildlife series and will be accompanied by writings from her personal memoirs. The first of numerous sculptures produced by Reed will also be introduced to the public at this time.

Recognized by the California Art Review as "one of California's outstanding artists," her works are in collections throughout the world and her wildlife murals grace the walls of the Mt. Kenya Safari Club in Africa. Reed's animal studies are renowned for their sense of motion and lifelike quality. She delights the viewer with unusual perspectives and energetic brushwork. Her uplifting images convey feelings of intimacy, and spontaneity.

While her paintings are executed in either acrylics or oils, her bronze sculptures of animals and dancers are produced using the "lost wax" technique. These three-dimensional works capture the essence of character as well as the form.

Reed attended the Art Institute of Chicago as a scholarship student at age 16 and obtained her BA in art from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL. While in college, her literary talents were also recognized when she won writing competitions sponsored by Vogue and Mademoiselle magazines ( Her poetry appeared in three anthologies and she was included in the National Poetry Hall of Fame.) She subsequently moved to New York to work for Conde Nast Publications and continued her studies in art at the New School in New York City. She later attended UCLA in California, San Miguel de Allende in Mexico and worked on her master's degree at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City.

Reed's long artistic career has been devoted to capturing the wonder of nature on canvas. After living half her life in California and throughout the world, she moved to Charleston in 1999.

In addition to her wildlife works, the gallery will also have on display several of her paintings of Monet's gardens at Giverny, the harbor at Portofino, and several scenes from Venice.
