Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, Presents Works by Art Education Teachers
Converse College
in Spartanburg, SC, will present an exhibition of works by area
art education teachers in the Milliken Art Gallery from Feb. 3
- 27, 2003. The exhibition will feature the talents of Susan Y.
West, David Benson, Ann R. Predmore, Melissa Parrish Pittman,
Doris Turner, Susanne Floyd Gunter and Robert M. Urban.
Susan Y. West is a native of Spartanburg, and has been honored
with numerous awards in both national and international competitions.
"I work in colored pencil," she says, "and call
my style 'realism with a twist' because I enjoy portraying common
subjects in uncommon ways. I believe that as artists, we draw
or paint best what we love best...and for me that has always been
animals."
David Benson has received a number of best-in-show awards for drawing and three-dimensional design. "I love using the torn edges of magazine paper as a part of the overall design element in my collage," he says. "Learning to control a bizarre medium adds interest and expands one creative ability."
Ann R. Predmore prefers working with transparent watercolor, pencil, and collage. "I particularly enjoy the manipulation of organic imagery using mixed media," she says. "I strive to render simple subjects in complex compositions with energy, movement, and contrasting elements."
Melissa Parrish Pittman focuses on the spontaneous visual dialogue created between artist and paper through mixed-media collage. In her collection, she continues her fascination with windows. "As a child," she recalls, "I was always drawn to windows. On walks through my neighborhood, I loved looking into people's windows and was intrigued by the small glimpse I was given into their life. With my collection to be displayed at Milliken, I explore the window as a visual metaphor both literally and figuratively."
Doris Turner chooses to work in several media, depending on the ideas that she wishes to convey or just whatever is handy. "Sometimes I gather sticks," she says, "and other natural resources. I have incorporated clay, pieces of fabric, and a large trashcan into my art. I have also done series in oil slicks, pencil, and acrylic paint on paper or canvas." Turner has won awards for her work in the Piedmont Fair, the Spartanburg Sidewalk Art Show, the Spartanburg Artist Guild Juried Exhibition, and the NCNB Annual Juried Exhibition.
