Karen's Korner in Mount Pleasant, SC Offers Works by Juanita Steuer
Karen's Korner on historic Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant, SC, is now headlining the unique art of woodburning by Artist of Pyrography, Juanita Steuer. The exhibit is entitled Nautical Burn by Juanita and will be featured the entire month of Feb. 2003.
Pyrography (Latin for "fire-writing") is the art of burning designs into wood, leather or paper. Steuer's burnings have nautical themes focusing mainly on lighthouses, pelicans and antique sailing vessels. She also has pieces depicting Charleston today and in the Civil War Era.
A self-taught artist, Steuer moved from Dayton,OH, to Charleston, SC, in 1988. She was inspired by the history, 1ifesty1e and wildlife of the Carolina Coast. Steuer states she loves working in pyrography, finding that grains in the wood gives each piece a life of its own. She adds color to her work using acrylic washes and watercolor. Accomplishing pyrography in a few short years, she already has several awards to her merit, is an exhibiting member of the Charleston and Mount Pleasant Artist Guilds, and has taught numerous woodburning classes.
A lover of old lighthouses, Steuer's latest work entitled Sailing Past the Past has generously been donated to Save the Light Foundation, Inc. (a group dedicated to the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse in Charleston) for their spring fundraiser as well as one half of her proceeds from the prints and notecards of Sailing Past the Past.
