Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Presents Three Solo Exhibitions
Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will host three new solo exhibitions through Feb. 15, 2003. The exhibitions are Raul Diaz: New Paintings, Ernesto Berra: New Constructions, and Helen Shirk: Commemorative Vessels.
Raul Diaz
Jerald Melberg Gallery is pleased to announce its fifth solo exhibition for Raul Diaz. Cordoba resident and friend of fellow Argentine, Ernesto Berra, Diaz has also emerged as an important artist in Argentina who is gaining notoriety in the United States. Diaz has held shows all over South America and is included in many major collections, including the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, CA.
Diaz's dream-like paintings create ethereal textured environments, which are both mysterious and compelling. Undeniably nostalgic, his paintings stir up memories of the child we all once were, while revealing the anxieties and obsessions of the artist's own spiritual adventure.
Ernesto Berra
The gallery also welcomes Ernesto Berra with his fourth solo exhibition. A lifelong resident of Cordoba, Berra is one of Argentina's most prominent and established artists. Described as an urban landscape artist, Berra's images often reflect Cordoba's aging structures that have begun to crumble with time. In an effort to preserve a bit of the past, Berra will often visit such sites, gather remnants from decaying buildings and incorporate them into his work.
Exhibiting his works since 1969, Berra has been honored with over seventy gallery and museum exhibitions. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California.
Helen Shirk
Jerald Melberg Gallery is pleased to present its first solo exhibition for Helen Shirk. Shirk's brilliantly colored metal sculptures are strongly influenced by the rich, diverse vegetation native to her Southern California home. She hammers copper into intriguing, plantlike forms, which are then finished with prismacolor and patina. Shirk's recent work illustrates her interest in functional objects that also serve to commemorate what she values in life.
Shirk earned an MFA from Indiana University and has been a Professor of Art at San Diego State University since 1975. She has been honored with over thirty solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad, and her metal sculptures can be found in such prestigious collections as the National Museum of Modern Art, Japan; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Renwick Gallery, Washington, D.C.; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
