Merrill-Jennings Galleries in Davidson, NC, invites you to mark your calendar for A Pretty Day, a One-Woman Show honoring North Carolina folk artist, Addie James, on view through Feb. 2003.
Authentic, self-taught artist Addie James brings joy and life to her colorful paintings reflecting her decades of living the African-American experience in Statesville, NC. Whether James is depicting a group of children at play, a gathering of "high fashion" friends out on the town, or painting African masks on the flip side of a homemade fan, each work smiles for attention and then surprises the beholder by captivating the imagination and lingering long after the image is gone.
James, locally called "Miss Addie" is a local treasure who rapidly gaining international recognition as an important American folk painter. In the past year her art has been featured at The American Folk Art Society's annual convention in Savannah, GA. "Guidepost Magazine will spotlight James' art in the Mar./Apr. issue of "Angels on Earth. The artist has been the focus of numerous newspaper articles, and her art is currently shown in galleries in Asheville, NC, Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA, and Hilton Head, SC. Collectors throughout the Eastern US, as well as from Paris and Barcelona, have purchased her paintings. All art originates from Merrill-Jennings Galleries in Davidson, where co-owner Kate Merrill is completing a book: MISS ADDlE'S GIFT: Portrait of an American Folk Artist.
