February Issue 2003
Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, Features Group Exhibit
Mind, Body, Spirit: Three Levels of Consciousness will be on display at the Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, though Feb. 2003. The exhibit features both two and three-dimensional works from artists Norbert W. Irvine and Lisa Ringelspaugh-Irvine of Asheville, NC and Gilda Aita of North Wilkesboro.
Norbert W. Irvine and his wife Lisa Ringelspaugh-Irvine both hail from a background in art education and currently are working artists living in Asheville. The Irvines incorporate mixed media which includes glitter, beads, sequins and other holographic objects into their art to create works emanating with luster and brilliance. Over 45 two-dimensional mixed media pieces are on display during this exhibition.
Of his work, Norbert Irvine writes: "Nature has always been my inspiration, from microscopic images to panoramic views from planes. Colors and shapes are critical to my work. To achieve the richness of color I desire, thin transparent layers of colors are added until the surface becomes very tactile. This way I can build up slowly creating a depth of color."
Ringelspaugh-Irvine has recently begun working with the intense metallic holographic media that is currently on display at the WAG. She also incorporates a variety of media into her pieces. Of her personal work, Ringelspaugh-Irvine writes: "Anything can and has inspired me to make art. It is my passion. Like a little kids says, I make art 'just because.' Like most artists, I have been surprised by recurring patterns and images, the most apparent being the landscape of mountains, beaches and water."
Currently an art educator at Central Wilkes Middle School, Gilda Aita has been an art teacher in the Wilkes County Schools for 18 years. She is exhibiting three-dimensional ceramic sculpture during this exhibit. Her diverse works, including organic shape vessels, whistles and drums, incorporate brilliant colors, spirals and flowing shapes. According to Aita, "My middle school students are a constant source of inspiration. Observing their ever changing moods and wide range of positive and negative reactions that are seemingly entirely dependant on the day and time grants me a great pool of emotion to incorporate into my pieces. As my students discover who they are, I also grow, discovering myself and who I am. This is reflected in my pottery."
