Who Among Us is a photographic and multi-media exhibit, which depicts the faces of homelessness in the Charleston area and of those in the community who help. It is coordinated and artistically directed by Jack Alterman and takes a look at some issues pertaining to the underlying causes of homelessness. Over 30 local professional photographers documented this serious community issue; the resulting exhibit is a photojournalistic essay that is compelling and thought provoking.

With the understanding that homelessness affects a cross section of our community - the unemployed and under-employed, working people, individuals as well as families with children - the project hopes to help dispel the stereotypical image of the homeless. By photographing the members of the Crisis Ministries community - the staff and the Board of Directors as well as the current residents of the shelters - the photographs show that the faces of the homeless are no different than the faces of our neighbors. No different than our own faces.

This exhibition is a project of the Center for Photography, in collaboration with the Crisis Ministries, an organization that recognizes 20 years of working to break the cycle of poverty, offering hope and a helping hand to Charleston's homeless community.

The participating photograpers are: Julia Lynn, Venessa Albury, Jack Alterman, Wilson Baker, Bob Deardorff, Jeff Johnson, Ann Maynard Jones, Milton Morris, Brennan Wesley, Joe Benton, Gene Furchgott, Louis Joyner, Marie Pelzer, Ron Rocz, Wade Spees, Robin Stone, Paul Alford, Scott Henderson, Yalonda James, Jeremy Kirtz, Dubose Blakeney, J.D. Cummings, Anne Darby Parker, Terry Kuzniar, Rick Rhodes, Dave Russin, Taylor Stewart, Dan Xeller, Peter Frank Edwards, Mahmood Fazal, Don Taylor, Larry Workman, John Dunn, Wade Lawrence, Kelly Green, and Matthew Scott. The project's documentary video was produced by Sunhead Productions.
