February Issue 2004

Davidson College in Davidson, NC, Features Prints by Chuck Close

The exhibition, Chuck Close: Prints and Process, will be on view in the William H. Van Every Gallery at Davidson College in Davidson, NC, through Feb. 27, 2004. This exhibition examines the diverse and innovative methods Close has developed along with master printmakers to create dynamic variations on similar subjects.

Best known for his large-scale, realistic paintings of friends and family members, Close has been breaking new ground in the area of fine art prints for over 30 years. His approach to the printmaking process is unique in that it relies heavily on the expertise and intuition of master printmakers. From handmade paper multiples to images requiring over 50 individual hand-carved woodblocks to create a single print, Close's work has been instrumental in bringing age-old techniques into the 21st century.

This exhibition includes an impressive selection of almost 50 individual works from private and institutional collections in the Southeast, as well as works on loan from Pace Editions, Inc. in New York. A full color brochure that includes an essay by June Lambla, Director of the Fine Print Room at Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte will be available.

Also on view in the Edward M. Smith Gallery is Senior Studio Majors' Exhibitions, on view throughout the Spring Semester.
