February Issue 2004

The Arts Center in Lexington, NC, Features Exhibition of Quilts

Arts United for Davidson County will present the exhibition, North Carolina Quilt Exhibit, at The Arts Center in Lexington, NC, from Feb. 3 through Mar. 31, 2004. Included in the exhibit are quilts from the collection of Lexington, NC, artist Bob Timberlake, quilts of the Carolina Piecemakers Quilt Guild and panels from the National AIDS quilt.

Quilts have been part of the fabric of our lives for many years. They have recorded our history and told the stories of our lives. They have showcased the talents of the seamstress and they have served the functional purpose of providing warmth.

Lexington artist Bob Timberlake has collected quilts for 30 years. Many of the quilts in his collection have been featured in his paintings and one, Whig's Defeat, which was also the first quilt in his collection, inspired upholstery patterns for the Bob Timberlake furniture collection. The quilts in Timberlake's collection date from 1840 to 1900 and are all American quilts. The oldest quilt was hand dyed from walnut shells and hokeberries. Three crazy quilts were
stitched from 1880 to 1890.

The second floor gallery features the works of the 25 member Carolina Piecemakers Quilt Guild which meets monthly at Verona's Fabrics in Uptown Lexington. Works on display include full quilts, wall hangings and other pieced items. The Piecemakers have also pieced a quilt for a raffle. Tickets can be purchased at Verona's Fabrics, at The Art
Center or from a guild member.

From Mar. 2 - 27, two 12 by 12 foot panels from the much larger National AIDS quilt will be showcased in the Main Lobby of The Art Center. The Davidson County visit is sponsored by Positive Wellness Alliance and is part of the annual national week of prayer. Julie Meyer, Executive Director of PWA says "This is the first time a panel from the national quilt has visited Davidson County and among the first for the area."

The exhibits are sponsored by LSB The Bank and The Bob Timberlake Gallery.
