February Issue 2004

Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, Features Works by Zanne Hochberg

An exhibition titled, Seeking The Center The Paintings, Prints, and Constructions of Zanne Hochberg (1931-2001), opens Feb. 9 and continues through Mar. 26, 2004, in the Rutledge and Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Galleries at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC.

This exhibition provides insight into the expressive power and uncompromising purity of Hochberg's creative art. Curated by Dr. Andrew Jay Svedlow, Winthrop's Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the exhibition includes 33 works of art gathered from private collections in Texas.

A native of Rochester, NY, Hochberg graduated from the University of Florida and the Southern Methodist University, becoming one of the first women to receive a Master of Fine Arts at SMU. Hochberg began a serious career as a painter in the 1950's and her connection with the second-generation abstract expressionists, particularly the work of Helen Frankenthaler, made her a pioneer in her own right. Hochberg's paintings have been exhibited at the Denver Museum of Art, the Oklahoma Art Center, and the Butler Institute of American Art. Her work has also been placed in such distinguished public and private collections as the Dallas Museum of Art, American Airlines, and Washburn University.

Winthrop Galleries will be closed from Mar. 15 to 19 for spring break.
