Meredith Anne Sutton
Meredith Anne Sutton spent the last six months working in Studio 106 as part of the Regional Emerging Artist Residency program. Established in January 2000, the Regional Emerging Artist Residency is a program that provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. The residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. Recipients are selected through a call to artists held twice a year.
Sutton spent her residency refining her metalsmithing skills and creating a unique body of jewelry pieces. She uses the tools and techniques of conceptual design to create little pieces of art that can be worn and quite often read (through the use of text in her work) to connect the wearer to the jewelry. Sutton finds quite often that the works speak to and of the personality and character of those who wear her creations. Sutton points out that the use of language and text also serves to engage the non-wearer or the viewers.
Sutton earned a BFA in Metals and Jewelry from the Savannah College of Art & Design. Recently, her work was published in 1000 Rings.
Mary Cook
Nest, Nesting, To Nest: Works on Paper, an exhibition of mixed media works by Mary Cook will be on view in Artspace's Upfront Gallery. This exhibit explores the allegorical nature of the nest. The nest takes on a different role serving as a base camp or place of shelter providing security and stability. For Cook, the work explores the emotionally charged subjects of fertility, age, family, and societal pressures. The mixed media works on paper employ the use of printmaking, drawing and painting.
Cook earned her BFA in Printmaking in 1997 and her MA in Painting from Marshall University, Huntington, WV, in 1999. Since graduating Cook has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions throughout West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina, and New York. She has been a member of the Artspace Artists Association since 2001. She currently resides in Charleston, WV, where she maintains her studio and works part time as a curator for the Callen McJunkin Gallery. Cook also teaches part-time at Marshall University and West Virginia State University.
Artspace is a non-profit visual art center dedicated to presenting quality exhibitions and education programs in an open-studio environment.
