Cultural Council of Georgetown County Features New Community Arts Center and Exhibition of Works by Area Artists in Pawley's Island, SC
The Cultural Council of Georgetown County is unveiling its new Community Arts Center in the Litchfield Exchange, at Pawley's Island, SC. The Center is presenting an exhibition of works by some of the area's emerging artists, including works by Teresa Lenihan, Catherine Thomas, Viki Jagger, Pat Paxton, Leez Garlock, Barnie Slice, Phyllis Graham, and Alyce Wood. The exhibit will be on view through Mar. 31, 2005.
"This exhibition reflects the range of talent we have in Georgetown County of painters, sculptors, and photographers," says Cultural Council Executive Director Randy Gerber. These exhibitions offer artists an opportunity to show and sell their work, while proceeds from the exhibition support Cultural Council programs.
The following are profiles of some of the artists featured in the current exhibition:
Teresas Lenihan's photography ranges from emotional black-and-white scenes, reflecting her admiration of Ansel Adams, to colorful abstracts, such as her Bunch of Straws which was honored at the South Carolina State Fair.
Born and raised in Washington, DC, Catherine Thomas spent many of her childhood Sundays accompanying her artist mother to the National Gallery of Art and Phillips Gallery in the nations capital. In her teen years, Thomas visited European museums and galleries, and then put her art on hold while working, getting married and raising six children. Through her oil painting, Thomas is now rediscovering her artistic heritage.
The sheer joy and enthusiasm of her work is what Viki Jagger thinks attracts people to her work. Some of that joy and enthusiasm may be left from her college years, playing tennis for University of California Berkley while working on a degree in English and Journalism.
Pat Paxton took up the paintbrush only three years ago. Yet, her work has already been featured on the cover of Sasee magazine and has been exhibited at ArtWorks by the Sea Gallery, Seacoast Artist Guild Exhibition and was selected by interior designers Elizabeth Taylor Satterfield and Bonnie Robbins for display in million-dollar homes as part of the Southern Elegance Home Show 2004. Paxton is also an advocate of breast cancer research and an author of C Notes: My Journey Through Breast Cancer.
Inspiration for the native South Carolinian sculptor, Leez Garlock, has been her return to the Lowcountry, where she spent her youth, coupled with opportunities offered through the Brookgreen Gardens Master Sculpture Program. Her love of this area and its people is her choice of theme for The Gullah Series Part 1 (Heartsong and The Fan) and Part II (Praise and Carolina Gold)
After a career spent in retail display and a dozen years painting 43 miles of murals in schools, Barnie Slice was forced to retire by shoulder surgery. Now he is a prolific painter, creating everything from touching scenes of playful children, abandoned ships and, most recently, some Harley-Davidson images that triggered admiration from national known Harley painters.
As a painter for more than 30 years, Phyllis Graham prefers landscapes as her subject of choice. She likes to photograph the scenes her self first, then paint from her photograph.
Alyce Wood developed her appreciation of fine art during her years as the owner of an antique store. Now she splits her time among painting, working with customers at Augustus & Carolinas in Georgetown, and serving as the Cultural Councils volunteer Gallery Curator.
The Cultural Council of Georgetown County is also unveiling its new Community Arts Center in the Litchfield Exchange, where a variety of class and arts events will be held. Painting instructors include: Jim Dyson, Danny McLaughlin and Jef Sturn.
